how do those software packages compare to 3dsmax, alias, form z?

Puar,
Alias and 3D Studio Max are not CAD programs, they are 3D graphics programs. Only pretty pictures :) In order to use the "surfaces" from those programs for manufacturing, you would need to export the surfaces into a CAD program like SolidWorks. The one's listed above in the poll are CAD programs. I am not familiar with Form Z, so I will not comment on that one. I will say that I have heard Alias is an excellent program for surfacing, however it is very expensive.
